Oranjestad honeymoon - the paradise you dream on
Aruba, once an insignificant pinprick on the map, is reinventing itself as the honeymoon capital of the Caribbean. Imagine a sun-drenched land where the tourists seem to consist entirely of loving couples holding hands and whispering sweet nothings, and you have Aruba. This once insignificant pinprick on the map has reinvented itself as a type of "love island" and seems intent on becoming the Caribbean's undisputed honeymoon capital. Whatever your romantic desire - be it a "dream cone" ice cream, a "lovers' fantasy" hot dog or a meal served with "honeymoon sauce" - the chances are that you'll find it on Aruba. The red carpet is laid out for honeymooners and they are offered the sorts of discounts usually reserved for students. Hotels participating in Aruba's One Cool Honeymoon scheme even hand out to honeymooners a complimentary bottle of Champagne and souvenir picture frame. To hit the honeymoon trail, hire a Jeep. Starting at the California Lighthouse on the island's north-west tip, head east. The Wish Rock Garden, featuring bizarre little stone towers that have been erected by visitors, is worth a look. You, too, can build a tower and then make a wish. Next, make for the Arikok National Park and visit the Tunnel of Love with its heart-shaped entrance. Stop for lunch at Charlie's, a restaurant-bar in San Nicolas once frequented by sailors. For about £12, you can enjoy shrimp, salad and fries topped off with "honeymoon sauce". This spicy sauce is not for the faint-hearted, however, andall thoughts of romance are likely to be forgotten as you make a grab for the nearest jug of water. Next stop is Oranjestad, from where you can take a boat to Sonesta Island, home of Honeymoon Cove. This private island, a few hundred yards off the coast, is owned by the Sonesta Resort Hotel. But you don't have to be a guest to visit. Twenty-five dollars will buy a transfer there and back, as well as lunch and a cocktail. Not to mention the chance to visit Honeymoon Cove, where you can hire a personal butler for the day. Be warned, though: the emphasis on Sonesta Island is very much on couples - conventional couples. In Oranjestad, be sure to check out the Lovers' Ice Cream outlet - the nearest thing to heaven for junk food junkies. The choice? A "lovers' fantasy" hot dog with free ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise, followed by a "dream cone" ice cream. After walking hand-in-hand along the beach at sunset (the favourite pasttime of honeymooners, according to a local survey), what better way to end the day than with a romantic candlelit dinner by the sea at the Bucuti Beach Resort - the hotel that apparently "accommodates" Aruba's highest percentage of honeymooners?
